Microsoft partner creates extension to fill gap in importing data into Dynamics 365 Business Central
Configuration Packages are the primary tools to import data into a company within a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central environment. Not only can you import data, but Configuration Packages can also be used to extract data. This allows the data to be manipulated and reimported into the same company or imported into a completely different company. Configuration Packages are a very robust tool to perform initial data imports and maintain data as your Business Central environment matures. However, they do have some limitations. One limitation is the inability to create a Configuration Package to import Master File notes into Business Central.
It has been Boyer’s experience that clients could have hundreds, if not thousands, of notes tied to their legacy system’s master file records. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not offer a Configuration Package — or another method — to import legacy system notes into Business Central’s Master File Records, better known as “Cards.” Below is an example of the Notes Factbox that is part of Business Central’s Item Card.
To fill this gap, Boyer created an extension that allows master file notes to be uploaded from a common Excel file. The Excel file is capable of mass uploading hundreds or thousands of notes into the following Business Central Master Record Cards:
- Item Card
- Vendor Card
- Customer Card
- Production Bill of Material Card
- Production Routing Card
