One problem that comes up frequently for Dynamics SL users is determining where the value in a field appearing on an SL screen is stored in the database. Determining that is actually fairly simple in most cases. When the value is a calculated value that is not stored, this method will not be helpful. To use this method, you must have access to Customization Mode (91.250.00). The customization level will not be significant if you are just looking for information, but you will want to make certain NOT to save any changes that might inadvertently be made.Let’s take as an example the question of where the Type field in the Journal Transactions screen comes from:First, enter customization mode either by pressing the blue button in the … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL-Finding Information about a Field
Dynamics SL Year End Event Almost Full for 2012
35 people are signed up for our Dynamics SL year-end closing event on December 20th. The purpose of the event is to help our clients understand better the nuances to making sure that year end is reconciled and that the accounting information has good data integrity. We started doing this event in 2002 for our Dynamics GP clients. It was so popular with that group that five years ago we added the event for our Dynamics SL clients as well. A continental breakfast and lunch are included in order to make it easy for clients to meet other clients and work through questions for other clients-rather than just Boyer staff. The primary presenters will be Jon Augdahl, Dynamics SL Practice Manager, Colleen McCoshen, Support Manager; and Paul … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL Year End Event Almost Full for 2012
Dynamics SL and Project Management
One of the beautiful things about Dynamics SL is its ability to do so many things well. Many of our clients love the customization capabilities of Dynamics SL and the grids for the data entry screens. Quick Query has become very popular among those that have upgraded to Dynamics SL 2011 here among our Minneapolis or mostly Minnesota-based clients. An additional thing that sets Dynamics SL apart from many mid-market accounting products is its ability to provide strong and well-integrated modules. An example of strong and well integrated modules is as follows: We have a Chicago-based Dynamics SL client that can have 1,000 ship to addresses (and related sales tax-thank you Avalara) for that one line. Dynamics SL can handle this with its … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL and Project Management
Dynamics SL Consultant Added-Paul James
At the beginning of the summer, Paul James became a part of our Dynamics SL consulting team. Paul joined us after gaining considerable expertise with Dynamics SL by taking on a few very difficult projects at a large and successful marketing agency here in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. A lot of the work related to foreign currencies within the financial modules. One of the things about Paul’s background that was extremely attractive to us was his warm and helpful personality. Jon Augdahl had worked with Paul prior to asking Paul to join us so having that longer term relationship was helpful in ensuring a reliable and trustworthy hire. Paul has so far taught Management Reporter financial statement creation classes, … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL Consultant Added-Paul James
Quick Query Video and Quick Query Editor Thoughts
In the Community section of the Dynamics SL site, there is a nice Quick Query video. It is under 8 minutes long but provides much of the training you may not have had time for when you worked through your upgrade from Dynamics SL version 7 to Dynamics SL version 2011.Some of my favorites that are demonstrated here are the ability to attach and view Word documents, as well as images from a simple query. The video also shows how you can link to a Sharepoint site so you don’t have 2 copies of the same document uploaded to two different sites. You can also use Windows Explorer to link your documents to a shared drive by dragging your documents to the attachment screen. You can change the names of the queries to make the views or data … [Read more...] about Quick Query Video and Quick Query Editor Thoughts
Boyer & Associates Named Top VAR to Watch by Accounting Today
After thoroughly examining several cloud-based vendors by attending their training classes, Boyer & Associates decided that focusing on Microsoft Dynamics was clearly the way to go. We thought about “the focus factor” and discussed it internally. The reason I bring this up now is because I believe it is the focus on Microsoft technologies that has helped us reach this point where Microsoft and the media is noticing how much we have improved in a short amount of time.Partners focused mainly on making money on the initial sale have also “diversified” which to Jack Boyer means “diluted” the strength of their consulting teams. There are too many modules for most individual consultants to assist clients competently with more than one … [Read more...] about Boyer & Associates Named Top VAR to Watch by Accounting Today
Dynamics SL Event Exceeds Expectations
Yesterday we held our annual Dynamics SL event for our clients at the new Microsoft Technology Center here in Minneapolis, MN-or Edina, MN to you locals. The event surpassed last year's attendance by 6 people. Last year we had 50 attend and this year we had 56. I’m especially pleased with the turnout since last year Microsoft released Dynamics SL 2011 (thank you Captain Obvious), and this year there were only a few service packs and a feature pack to discuss as new-yet more people attended.Debra Edlund-Lopez added some key thoughts that I will blog about next week with regard to Windows 8 as well. Debra has a lot of energy and does a nice job of discussing integration points between Dynamics ERP products and the rest of the Microsoft … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL Event Exceeds Expectations
The Timecard Dilemma with Dynamics SL
Those of you that use Dynamics SL for Professional Services work tend to love Dynamics SL’s project series. There are very few bothersome areas since the modules cover in good depth some of the most important things to you-Utilization? There’s a module for it. Flexible Billings, there’s a module called “Flexible Billings”. Time and Expense entry and approvals-yep, you guessed it-there’s a module for it that allows you your choice of a rich client or a web client. There is a transaction creator module called “Project Allocator” that creates billable transactions from: timecards, expense reports, vendor purchase orders turned ap vouchers…even journal transactions.Project Allocator appears to be designed into the product from the beginning … [Read more...] about The Timecard Dilemma with Dynamics SL
Dynamics SL Minneapolis, MN Client Event
Each year we hold both a Dynamics SL and Dynamics GP client event, for free, at Microsoft’s offices. Our offices are not large enough to accommodate 60 or so people per session for these events. Clients thoroughly enjoy these sessions as it is a chance for them to discuss configuration options with the many Boyer & Associates Dynamics SL experts. It is also a chance for them to visit with other clients of ours that have better or different experience they can learn from. The event is slightly less than a day, there is no airfare or hotel for most, and the ideas they leave with typically give them a sense that we are truly grateful for their business all year. What is unique about this year's event?1.) This year we have invited … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL Minneapolis, MN Client Event
Dynamics SL-Using Two Monitors
Labor is by far what most of us spend our money on when it comes to a business or non-profit organization. You can buy an additional 22 inch refurbished flat screen monitor for less than $200. So if you are not already using a second monitor, it may be because you don’t understand how much this can help you be more productive or you travel a lot and don’t spend much time in the office. If an additional monitor can make a person multi-task slightly less or be able to do two things at once more effectively, even a 5% improvement in a person’s productivity makes this investment worthwhile. For us, even the consultants that are rarely in the office have additional monitors. Why would they want or need this? Often times they create … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL-Using Two Monitors
