Microsoft has been encouraging most of their Dynamics ERP partners to continue servicing their existing client bases and to also select a market or two where they can be uniquely knowledgeable and valuable. This blog post is about the accomplishment of that mission – the pros and cons, the benefits, and the drawbacks of making such a move. For me, it was at first unappealing to go down this road of “putting more eggs into one basket.” My reasons were threefold: (1) we had good success at attracting prospects to events comparing Dynamics GP to Dynamics NAV to Dynamics SL, (2) we had limited success in trying to focus on verticals as broad as “distribution,” “professional services organizations,” and “non-profits,” and (3) we had purchased … [Read more...] about “Verticalizing” Your Dynamics ERP Practice
My Favorite NAV Help Screen – Entering Criteria in Filters
One of the many features of Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the ability to filter the vast detailed data NAV records. To make the filtering easier, NAV has a sophisticated filtering system that allows you to filter on a single field or a combination of fields to isolate the data required. Many users never become accomplished with this great tool because they don’t understand the options for filtering data within NAV.My favorite NAV help screen addresses this issues. From NAV help, if you search for Entering Criteria in Filters (NAV 2015), a concise screen of filter options and examples is displayed. This help screen is beneficial enough that I have suggested to many of my clients that they print it out, laminate it, and distribute it to their … [Read more...] about My Favorite NAV Help Screen – Entering Criteria in Filters

Dynamics NAV Rapid Implementation Methodology Tool
One of the most underutilized features of Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the Rapid Implementation Methodology (RIM) tool. The purpose of the tool is to help clients convert data into NAV themselves, without paying a programmer to write conversions. The RIM tool comes with the ability for the user to create Configuration Packages.Data will be imported into or exported out of a file or group of files within each package.By editing the package, the user can view, add, or delete files from the package.Within a package, it is normally recommended that the client setup one record manually and then export the data. This will create a spreadsheet that can then be populated and imported back into NAV. By creating one record manually, it … [Read more...] about Dynamics NAV Rapid Implementation Methodology Tool
Sand Mining ERP Systems
Boyer & Associates has recently run into a number of sand mining businesses that have outgrown their Quickbooks systems. Sand mining for the oil fracking businesses in North Dakota is an industry that has exploded with most of the sand mining operations in Wisconsin being able to sell all of the sand they can produce. In fact, most of the mines don’t compete because they all have the unique issue of being able to sell all of the inventory they can produce. The constraint is in getting it to its North Dakota or Texas location, usually by railcar. Here are some of the issues we’ve been able to consult on and plan a resolution for with sand mining firms needing more robust systems:Creating a workflow for approving purchases. Many of … [Read more...] about Sand Mining ERP Systems
Benefits of Microsoft Support with Dynamics NAV
I have worked with Microsoft Dynamics NAV for 16 years, before Microsoft purchased it and it was called Navision. A common question I’m asked is if Microsoft Support is a good investment. My answer is yes, and here is why.Microsoft Dynamics NAV has had new releases approximately every two years, with some of them being major improvements in design, functionality, and technology. In the last three releases (NAV5, NAV 2009, and NAV2013), not only was the software functionality improved, but major changes to the technology behind NAV were implemented. Some of these changes include a stronger interface to Microsoft Excel, Rapid Implementation tools, and Role Tailored Client. With your Microsoft Support agreement, you not only get access to … [Read more...] about Benefits of Microsoft Support with Dynamics NAV

NAV and Office 365 – The Power of Sharing
Microsoft recently announced that Dynamics NAV would be integrated with Office 365, which is a match made in heaven (or at least in the cloud).Pairing NAV with Office 365 allows Microsoft to offer its most prolific mid-sized product with the power of tools like Excel and SharePoint. This combined functionality addresses many of the issues mid-sized businesses struggle with, such as remote entry and work flow. By using Excel as an entry point, companies can harness the power of Office 365 and NAV to allow their people to enter orders anywhere in the world through a spreadsheet design they are most likely familiar with using. With Office 365 being in the cloud, there are no performance issues based on a user’s distance from the main … [Read more...] about NAV and Office 365 – The Power of Sharing
Constraint-Based Scheduling in Dynamics NAV
With all the features of Microsoft Dynamics NAV’s manufacturing module, it is easy to overlook one of the most powerful – Constraint-Based Scheduling. For those people who are not familiar with Constraint-Based Scheduling, it is based on the theory that you should only finite (schedule to only open buckets of time) your production constrained work centers and infinite (schedule each order without regard to other orders in the shop) for all other work centers. For those people that are familiar with the book “The Goal,” written by Eliyahu Goldratt, this is the major message in the book. The theory of constraints is best described using laundry as an example, since just about everyone understands the process of doing laundry. Because the … [Read more...] about Constraint-Based Scheduling in Dynamics NAV
