Making Salestax less Taxing
Avalara, the national web service, that maintains state, county, and local salestaxes by taxing jurisdiction, is working on a maps technology that will make automating salestax even more accurate.Currently sales tax services do their salestax computations by zip code. This method is typically only 95% accurate. The challenge becomes when clients are paying for a web service for each transaction, their expectation is complete accuracy-almost 100%.It is embarrassing and frustrating to have a client tell you you charged them the wrong sales tax after you’ve taken the step of ensuring your taxes are correct by paying for a web service to automatically check, compute and insert proper salestax records into your sales … [Read more...] about Making Salestax less Taxing
Dynamics GP Key Interview Plans
Carol Simonson: You clearly like this idea of interviewing other people for your Dynamics GP posts now. Why are you doing this?Jack Boyer: I’m doing this because it occurred to me that my thoughts and ideas, while fascinating to me and my kids (ok I’m lying about the kids) are only so interesting due to my limited experience as mainly a sales and marketing professional and business owner.I’m also interviewing people because it allows me to learn more. One of the nice things about blogging is that you need to come up with research, create, or in this case borrow thoughts on a pretty much daily basis. This allows you to learn a lot of new things. I thought to myself if I could not only learn new things but get introduced to people … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Key Interview Plans

Dynamics SL Veteran Consultant on SL in the Cloud An Interview with Kurt Bradley
Kurt Bradley has been a friend of mine since the late 80’s. His business, Bradley Consulting, was one of my accounts as a Solomon Software Regional Manager. Kurt worked and lived in Houston at the time and still does.Kurt has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Boston University. He worked for years as a financial analyst and corporate planner at Fortune 500 firms before tiring of corporate life and starting an accounting software consulting practice. Kurt really knows Dynamics SL.Jack Boyer: Kurt you were speaking to me about a client of yours that used an old, unsupported version of Dynamics SL with a maintenance plan that expired in 2006. AP Automation
Dynamics SL is known for its Multi-Company and Project Accounting capabilities. Dynamics GP is known for its strong financial modules and integration tools.Still the fact is that many of our clients on both sides simply buy and use General Ledger, FRx or Management Reporter for Financial Statement creation, and then Accounts Payable. Many add Accounts Payable EFT to get out of the writing checks tedium, but still…more than half of our clients on both sides are using these Microsoft products for their financial capabilities, not their distribution or project capabilities.Which begs the question…”What about AP Automation?” Isn’t there more we can do to eliminate the effort involved in having someone key in invoices for us to pay when … [Read more...] about AP Automation
Easier Sales Order entry in Dynamics GP
When we compare our Dynamics GP product to our Dynamics SL product, we find the following to be true.1. Dynamics GP is easier to set up and get going quickly.2. Dynamics SL is more fully featured.SalesPad, a distribution add-on helps bridge the gap between ease of use and being fully featured. People entering sales orders in SalesPad have a much easier time getting their orders in while at the same time having better features than the Sales Order Processing (SOP) and Purchase Order Processing (POP) modules offered by Dynamics GP.In the Sales Order screen within SalesPad you cansee the whole ship to address and easily change that Ship To address. rearrange fields yourself as a user so that the fields are in the order … [Read more...] about Easier Sales Order entry in Dynamics GP

A Better Way to Show Discounts on Quotes
We have a client here in the Twin Cities, MN, USA that resells door hardware mostly to schools. Before using Dynamics GP, this client was going through challenging quote gymnastics each time they did a quote. They were challenged when they would not discount the quote for the client, and they were challenged internally, with a lot more work and setting future unwanted expectations, when they would offer a discount.Because they did not want the client to see the word “Discount” on the quote-thereby encouraging each client to ask for a discount each time something was quoted, they went through the difficult process of effectively discounting each line item so that the quote itself did not show the word “discount” at the bottom-but footed … [Read more...] about A Better Way to Show Discounts on Quotes
