One problem that comes up frequently for Dynamics SL users is determining where the value in a field appearing on an SL screen is stored in the database. Determining that is actually fairly simple in most cases. When the value is a calculated value that is not stored, this method will not be helpful. To use this method, you must have access to Customization Mode (91.250.00). The customization level will not be significant if you are just looking for information, but you will want to make certain NOT to save any changes that might inadvertently be made.Let’s take as an example the question of where the Type field in the Journal Transactions screen comes from:First, enter customization mode either by pressing the blue button in the … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL-Finding Information about a Field
Dynamics GP Quick Quote Tool
How many times in a year do you have interest in a product that could solve problems but you don’t know if it’s worth the hassle of speaking to a salesperson? For me, I would say this happens often. For instanace, I read this unbelievable book called “Traction” and I tried unsuccessfully to self-implement the concepts that it presented. The book had great points and I was frustrated-but certainly not willing to quit. I had to sit through a 90 minute presentation in order to learn that the consultant charged $3,000 per day to help implement the process. What if I could learn this online without having to sit through a 90 minute pitch? Would I be interested? You bet. That’s when I realized how valuable this Quick Quote Tool is that we … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Quick Quote Tool
Dynamics GP 2013 is Here
It’s January. Today was a single digit temperature day here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twin Cities have great health clubs however. Ours has a sauna, and whirlpool-and I needed both.Another hot thing this frigid winter day is Dynamics GP 2013. Microsoft keeps investing heavily in this product and with its ISV (Independent Software) Community, it's arguably the best middle market ERP product in the U.S. Here are some of the things I find exciting about this upgrade.Microsoft invested 78,000 hours of development time into this product. Many of Microsoft’s competitors in the middle market are less than 20 million in sales and could not possibly make this type of hours commitment to an new version of their product. Dynamics GP … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP 2013 is Here
Dynamics GP-Finding that Table Name
Have you ever wanted to or needed find a table behind a window or the name of a field on a screen? Dynamics GP comes with a built in way to assist you with that. Select the Microsoft Dynamics GP menu, Tools, Resource Descriptions. There are three options on that menu Tables, Fields, Windows. Note: the same menu is available from any window in Dynamics GP. Go to that menu and select Windows, you will see the window below:You can view information about any product that is installed on the machine you are working. If you want to get information about a window other than Microsoft Dynamics GP select that Product. The Series typically relates to where the window lies within the Dynamics GP menu structure. The Customer Maintenance window is … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP-Finding that Table Name
Dynamics SL Year End Event Almost Full for 2012
35 people are signed up for our Dynamics SL year-end closing event on December 20th. The purpose of the event is to help our clients understand better the nuances to making sure that year end is reconciled and that the accounting information has good data integrity. We started doing this event in 2002 for our Dynamics GP clients. It was so popular with that group that five years ago we added the event for our Dynamics SL clients as well. A continental breakfast and lunch are included in order to make it easy for clients to meet other clients and work through questions for other clients-rather than just Boyer staff. The primary presenters will be Jon Augdahl, Dynamics SL Practice Manager, Colleen McCoshen, Support Manager; and Paul … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL Year End Event Almost Full for 2012
Four Characteristics of a Stellar Microsoft ERP Independent Software Vendor (ISV)
At Boyer, we have a number of Independent Software Vendors, especially on the Dynamics GP side of our practice, that we consider tremendous. Most of the ISV’s we sell are quite honestly reactive. We have a client that needs the software to do punch out for requisitions and work with a certain vendor’s medical materials management software…so we research, demo, have the ISV demo to the client and like magic…problem solved. Microsoft has to take some credit here due to their screening process of ISV's but generally the quality is great. We have both a strong Dynamics SL practice and a strong Dynamics GP practice. For both products we have found more of a long term opportunity for improvement than a reactive “solve this problem for this … [Read more...] about Four Characteristics of a Stellar Microsoft ERP Independent Software Vendor (ISV)
Dynamics SL and Project Management
One of the beautiful things about Dynamics SL is its ability to do so many things well. Many of our clients love the customization capabilities of Dynamics SL and the grids for the data entry screens. Quick Query has become very popular among those that have upgraded to Dynamics SL 2011 here among our Minneapolis or mostly Minnesota-based clients. An additional thing that sets Dynamics SL apart from many mid-market accounting products is its ability to provide strong and well-integrated modules. An example of strong and well integrated modules is as follows: We have a Chicago-based Dynamics SL client that can have 1,000 ship to addresses (and related sales tax-thank you Avalara) for that one line. Dynamics SL can handle this with its … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL and Project Management
Quick Query Video and Quick Query Editor Thoughts
In the Community section of the Dynamics SL site, there is a nice Quick Query video. It is under 8 minutes long but provides much of the training you may not have had time for when you worked through your upgrade from Dynamics SL version 7 to Dynamics SL version 2011.Some of my favorites that are demonstrated here are the ability to attach and view Word documents, as well as images from a simple query. The video also shows how you can link to a Sharepoint site so you don’t have 2 copies of the same document uploaded to two different sites. You can also use Windows Explorer to link your documents to a shared drive by dragging your documents to the attachment screen. You can change the names of the queries to make the views or data … [Read more...] about Quick Query Video and Quick Query Editor Thoughts
Boyer & Associates Named Top VAR to Watch by Accounting Today
After thoroughly examining several cloud-based vendors by attending their training classes, Boyer & Associates decided that focusing on Microsoft Dynamics was clearly the way to go. We thought about “the focus factor” and discussed it internally. The reason I bring this up now is because I believe it is the focus on Microsoft technologies that has helped us reach this point where Microsoft and the media is noticing how much we have improved in a short amount of time.Partners focused mainly on making money on the initial sale have also “diversified” which to Jack Boyer means “diluted” the strength of their consulting teams. There are too many modules for most individual consultants to assist clients competently with more than one … [Read more...] about Boyer & Associates Named Top VAR to Watch by Accounting Today
Dynamics GP Collections Management
When attempting to discuss the value behind upgrading from the Business Essentials (BE) series of modules to the Advanced Management (AM) series of modules, it is often difficult to persuade clients to move up from one to the other. The Business Essentials option after all, offers an incredible array of useful modules such as General Ledger, Payables Management, Receivables Management, Management Reporter for financial statements, bank reconciliation and even the main parts of the distribution series such as sales order processing, inventory and purchase order processing. The project accounting in Dynamics GP is useable but certainly not the best module in Dynamics GP. A client would need to upgrade from BE to AM to get this module. This … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Collections Management
