If you are a Dynamics GP Version 10 or Version 2010 user, you may think this post is going to be mostly about the 150 new features that are part of Dynamics GP 2013. …but “What’s New in GP 2013?” has already been covered by a few good bloggers. This post is about the slew of additional value that Microsoft is providing to its user base simply for paying your annual enhancement plan and transitioning to GP 2013.The first thought that comes to my mind is that unlimited payroll users are free. We had a client 3 years ago pay over $40,000 for payroll and HR. Now most of the costs to making this transition are in paying us to setup their payroll. Here in Minnesota more than in other places I’ve lived (Illinois, Pennsylvania) people avoid … [Read more...] about Real Value in Upgrading to Dynamics GP 2013

How to Add an SSRS report to the Dynamics SL 2011 Menu
This post is a technical post. I should warn you that if you do not do report writing or technical work with Dynamics SL you may fall asleep after the second sentence of the next paragraph. Please forward the link immediately to your more technical counterparts if you are in danger of a slumber episode. You should be able to make it beyond the bullets below regardless of your technical abilities or your attention span.By and large, the process for adding an SSRS report to the Dynamics SL 2011 menu is the same as adding any other report to the SL menu.First you need to create the report, which gives you an RDL file in the case of the SSRS report instead of the RPT of a Crystal Report. Copy that file into the Usr_Rpts directory (in … [Read more...] about How to Add an SSRS report to the Dynamics SL 2011 Menu
How to use Dynamics GP Unit Accounts to enhance your management reports
Many Dynamics GP clients use statistical data in combination with financial information to create key metrics that management uses to track the performance of a company. What many people don’t realize is that you can utilize Unit Accounts in GP to add metrics to existing financial reports. What are Unit Accounts? Unit Accounts are like Posting Accounts except that they are for non-financial or statistical data. Instead of currency, they track units. For example, a company might use Revenue per Headcount to measure the efficiency and productivity of its employees. Unit Accounts for headcount by department would need to be set up in the Unit Account Maintenance window (Financial>Cards>Unit Accounts.)Tip: It is best to select all … [Read more...] about How to use Dynamics GP Unit Accounts to enhance your management reports
5 Key Dynamics ISV’s to Visit at Convergence 2013
One of my favorite things about Microsoft’s Annual Dynamics User Group Meeting or “Convergence” each year (second only to seeing my buddy Pat Fitzhenry from Microsoft) is spending time with the Independent Software Vendors whose unique products make our strong but broad out of the box Microsoft ERP offerings into unique solutions for organizations. This post will be dedicated to the ISV’s I plan to visit first while in New Orleans on March 18th.1. Binary Stream. This firm offers three products that helped start our year well in 2013. Binary offers a Multi-Entity Management program that allows many entities or balance sheets to reside in one Dynamics GP database. My second favorite product is their Advanced Recurring Contract … [Read more...] about 5 Key Dynamics ISV’s to Visit at Convergence 2013

Tips to Understanding the Function Keys in Dynamics SL
If you’ve seen another Dynamics SL user take a shortcut entering data that you did know, you might want to file this post. This post shows what all the function keys in Dynamics SL can do for you.F1 – Brings up the help screen for the screen you are working in. This example show me working in the Dynamics SL Voucher Maintenance screen.F2 – Moves you into a field in the grid to allow you to edit that value. Normally, when you traverse a grid, you are not truly in the fields that you move over. Changes made will be put into the field, overriding the existing value, but you can’t edit the existing value. This function puts you into the field, allowing you to act on the contents of the cell.F3 – Brings up the possible values list for … [Read more...] about Tips to Understanding the Function Keys in Dynamics SL
Dynamics SL-Finding Information about a Field
One problem that comes up frequently for Dynamics SL users is determining where the value in a field appearing on an SL screen is stored in the database. Determining that is actually fairly simple in most cases. When the value is a calculated value that is not stored, this method will not be helpful. To use this method, you must have access to Customization Mode (91.250.00). The customization level will not be significant if you are just looking for information, but you will want to make certain NOT to save any changes that might inadvertently be made.Let’s take as an example the question of where the Type field in the Journal Transactions screen comes from:First, enter customization mode either by pressing the blue button in the … [Read more...] about Dynamics SL-Finding Information about a Field
Dynamics GP Quick Quote Tool
How many times in a year do you have interest in a product that could solve problems but you don’t know if it’s worth the hassle of speaking to a salesperson? For me, I would say this happens often. For instanace, I read this unbelievable book called “Traction” and I tried unsuccessfully to self-implement the concepts that it presented. The book had great points and I was frustrated-but certainly not willing to quit. I had to sit through a 90 minute presentation in order to learn that the consultant charged $3,000 per day to help implement the process. What if I could learn this online without having to sit through a 90 minute pitch? Would I be interested? You bet. That’s when I realized how valuable this Quick Quote Tool is that we … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP Quick Quote Tool
Dynamics GP 2013 is Here
It’s January. Today was a single digit temperature day here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twin Cities have great health clubs however. Ours has a sauna, and whirlpool-and I needed both.Another hot thing this frigid winter day is Dynamics GP 2013. Microsoft keeps investing heavily in this product and with its ISV (Independent Software) Community, it's arguably the best middle market ERP product in the U.S. Here are some of the things I find exciting about this upgrade.Microsoft invested 78,000 hours of development time into this product. Many of Microsoft’s competitors in the middle market are less than 20 million in sales and could not possibly make this type of hours commitment to an new version of their product. Dynamics GP … [Read more...] about Dynamics GP 2013 is Here
